Sam Houston has a good reputation in Texas and surrounding states. When I was in TX and LA, I hired several grads from there, so don’t think you have to go to UT or A&M for a business degree.

If money is your only factor, check out starting and 5-year salary stats from the SHSU career services office, They should be able to tell you if you can make what you want. If you are looking for $50K to $70K as a starting salary, you need to be at the top of your class in Accounting or Finance and get a Master’s to get in the bottom of that range. If that is a 7-10 year salary in today’s dollars, that is reachable in any of those degrees if you work hard and go for a Masters at night or weekends.

The Career Services office can also help you decide on a major. Christmas break may be a good time to do this before next semester begins. This decision should not be based on money alone–this is your life we are talking about. An unhappy employee is typically a poor employee.

Math is an important part of any business major’s key skill set. Knowledge of interest rate, present value, future value, cost-volume-profit and other calculations are imperative for your success in a business career. You need to be comfortable with college algebra and business math as well as statistics to do a business-related job well.

I hope this helps you and you make the right decision.
