I have no experience in either, my opinion would be business finance. Marketing to me, seems the more challenging of the two.
That depends upon your personality. I’d go with the finance degree personally, but then I’m more inclined in that direction. Marketing folks are too fluffy for me. But, if you look at a lot of boards these days, you see a lot of people with marketing degrees.
Both are great arenas to be in but in the future I would want to bet on Business Finance. It (money) is THE reason for the existance of business and no business can exist without it, and MANY business in their formative years either sink or swin depending on their access to money.
So… all things being equal, be the money man. That’s where the money is.
Selling has always been the money position for the motivated. You are on your own, You have to develop a clientle. You have to know your competition and success comes pretty much based on your efforts. What financial experience do you have togive to a company? Do you like analytical work and numbers? Maybe finance is the field.
At my university, Finance is a really popular major for Business students. Job prospects seem very bright and everyone aspires to be investment bankers and whatnot. Plus, the pay is relatively high. I hear the pay in the Marketing industry doesn’t justify the long hours put in.
I’m majoring in Marketing. I love it even though everyone tells me the prospects for Finance are better. I’m not keen in Finance so what’s the point? I rather do what I enjoy and I think it’s important to like your (future) job.
If I were keen in both Marketing and Finance, I would definitely choose the Finance route.
It may help if you talk to people in both industries and professors at school to find out more.
I would have to agree to disagree with some answers.
Both are good careers, a business cannot grow without marketing while a business cannot also run without finance management.
I would say it depends on two factors, one is where do you feel more comfortable? Are you a logical and analytic person or are you a creative and innovative person? Finance and Marketing is as different as night and day and both are totally different from each other.
If you love working with numbers and hate constantly thinking of new ideas then go for finance. If you hate number-crunching but love challenges and unpredictability then go for marketing.
Another factor to consider is to check the area where you’re planning to work. Large companies will require both so it’s not a problem looking for jobs. If the place has only small and medium size businesses then finance is a safer and easier bet.
