You’re not supposed to ask rhetorical questions.

Laissez-Faire Guy June 21, 2010 at 3:38 am

Because we are stubborn. And because China isn’t really communist any more.

China is a one party rule gov’t with a capitalist economy. Cuba is a full blown communist nation.

In any case, I agree that our Cuba policy for the last 30 years or so is stupid. Our engaging with China has helped the Chinese people prosper immensely. Our feuding with Cuba has kept those people poor.

Engaging and trading with them would only help them move away from communism, but at a slow pace.

Because China isnt our next door neighbor

It’s not a rhetorical question because it requires a response (clarification). The U.S. embargo has to do with protesting the revolutionary Castro-led government ousting the U.S. friendly (read sponsored) government led by Bastista.

kind of silly huh????

You might want to ask China that question. It seems that they are actually the ones in charge.

Get your facts straight, and you still have a point. We do not have an embargo on Cuba because they are Communist. Its because of human rights abuse. But China has a worst record.

The real reason is that money talks. We have borrowed “billions” from China to pay for our current wars. I bet you think I’m kidding. Check it out and see.

This apparent quagmire is actually the result of different political forces and market economy dynamics.

Cuba only makes good cigars.

China makes everything else.

The game is about greed and money not morals. If Cuba had something of value besides – the real value of their wonderful people and culture -well we would know the answer because there would not be an embargo.

Because china has a lot of lead they want to get rid of

Cuba, being our next door neigh invited the Russians to bring in icbms with nukes to intimidate us or worse, and you can think what you will as i do fidelcastro and his govt policies are what has kept his people poor, why should we live like the south Koreans with nukes aimed at them from right across the rice paddy, if we open trade with Castro what guarantee will we get he doesn’t do as before or as Hugo is doing. Castro violated or at least unilaterally dropped out of the OAS, which means he was hostile to western hemisphere alliances

Can Cuba supply with an unlimited supply of cheap inferior products that will allow huge profits to the corporations? Does China have a huge, active voting block in Florida? Answer those questions and you will have an idea of what is going on.

It all started as a spitting contest when the US (read CIA) sponsored brutal right-wing dictatorship of Juan “The Butcher” Battista was overthrown by a group of communist rebels led by Che Gueverra and Fidel Castro.

We’re still mad over that and have imposed economic sanctions tom force the infidel Castro out of power. After 50 years, the sanctions have worked and Fidel has retired citing health reasons. But his brother remains in power so the US is maintaining its sanctions until the last Castro is removed from power.

I am asuming that will be Raul’s daughter.

smartblond48 June 21, 2010 at 10:52 am

Because Cuba no longer has anything that the USA can exploit.
And they are still P/O’d that Castro had the cajones to kick their crooked asses out in the first place.
They still don’t appreciate the fact that he at least let them leave. If it had not been for Castro’s good graces the whole lot of them would still be rotting in a Cuban prison.

Because the United States only pick on those much weaker than themselves?
