I just started trading a few months ago. I am a college senior.
I picked Scottrade over E*Trade and TD Ameritrade. Because based on the money I have and the amount of trades I make, I think the commission fee is cheaper at Scottrade, and it’s a flat rate.
Scottrade.
NO account maintenance, service, or inactivity fees.
$7.00 online trading commission for stock over $1.00 a share.
Tutorial and webcast available to customers.
Excellent trading platforms (very user friendly).
Excellent customer service (398 Branch offices nationwide).
$500.00 minimum to open an account.
If you do end up opening it with Scottrade, use this referral code: EJVR8926

I’ve had my IRA account with Ameritrade for several years now and, as a frequent user, have no complaints whatsoever.
Yes it is , for stocks. I do not trade bonds.
It depends on what you are looking for and how you trade/invest.
If you want just cheap trades , then something else might be good too.
But Ameri gives you good educational features ( minyanville etc. ) , and many good features like trailing stops , triggers etc. which the cheaper brokers might not give.
If you trade only a few times a month then its worth it. Only if you trade so much that commissions start to matter a lot, then you look for someone cheaper.
