For all businesses there must be certain business permits. In your case you would have to check with your villiage/city the local health department, and the state.
In some states there is a website you can go to in order to complete all of this at one time.
What legal form of business are you going to operate as? a sole proprietorship a LLC or incorporating?
But for a small business like this, most people do it as long as they can before being caught, then they do all the hoopla. (reality) But you would run the risk of fines, or even imprisonment in some cases.
All you really need is a tax ID, liability insurance.
You will have to have your place of business up to health and safety code, that will also depend on if you have people working for you or not.
Treating this like it is a real business (and want to do it legally…) You will need:
a business license
You’ll need a tax id/ EIN number (super easy and free)
You MIGHT need a resellers license, it depends on the extent you go to….
if you’re businesses name is anything other than your first and
last name then you’ll need a fictitious business name
you will need insurance (call an insurance agent for a quote),
and you’ll need to go through the county/city health department for inspections and rules.
If you want to hire people, you’ll need more than that (work mans comp, etc).
Lots of paperwork, lots of work, i know. (i just started my own business, what a hassle!) But if it were easy, everyone would be doing it…. ;o)
For more questions, call your local SBDC, city hall or where ever you go to get permits. People are happy to answer questions, even if you’re a student. You can call the Board of Equalization too. People are really happy to help, I promise. They’d rather help you do it the right way then have to deal with helping you if you’ve done it the wrong way, know what i mean?
