I would only advise doing the following in an extreme case, but if you are desperate then try this. Don’t make payments for a couple of months. Then contact the company and tell them that you are in a tough financial situation, but want to honor your committment to them. Ask them if they would be willing to lower your interest payment. If they aren’t, then ask them if they’d be willing to lower your monthly payment, stretching out the time you would repay them. Often, companies are willing to work with people, because they don’t want to have to turn your account over to collections or seek repossesion of the vehicle. If the intial customer service person doesn’t give you a satifactory answer then ask to speak to a supervisor.
The reason you don’t pay for a couple of months before making the call is that if they aren’t getting their money, they’ll be more willing to deal. I know that this often works with credit card companies. They are known to wave finance charges or lower interest rates, sometimes entirely, if it means they will get their money quickly.
Try refinancing your car. I just did it and saved a lot of money. Try Capital One Auto Refinance or Eloans. These were the places I tried. Also Lower My Bills.com. There are places that will refinance your car with not so good credit. Also, if you have a credit card where you have good history, check and see if they offer car refinancing offers. These companies are willing to do business with people who have shown them that they will pay.
You can apply on-line and will get answers very quickly. I applied to companies on Saturday and was sending off my papers on Monday. That is the best advice I could give. If that doesn’t work, then call your finance company. They may be able to allow you to skip a payment. It is a temporary fix and not one that I recommend as you still have to pay the interest, but it might help for the meantime.
DO NOT NOT SEND THE PAYMENT!!! This can trash your credit score and keep you from refinancing or make it harder for you to finance in the future. The long-term affects will follow you and that is not worth it.
