I heard something like 70% of new restaurants go bust within ONE YEAR. Just think how many are taken over by new management, stick around for a year or two, then sell up themselves. If you’re of foreign stock (say Italian and living in the US or Indian and in the UK), you may have some kind of natural advantage (can source ingredients or staff from your native country, etc), but if you’re a typical American, say, I’d stick to doing what your country is good at. That’s my career tip. In the US, be a lawyer. In the UK, an accountant. In Germany, an automotive engineer. And so forth.

If you want a franchise, you need a minimum of $20,000 liquid capital (cash, securities, home equity) And a net worth of at least $100,000 to meet the investiment parameters of most franchise companies.

All depends on how much effort you put into marketing and advertising. Do your research! Identify who will be your customers, who lives and works and plays in your neighborhood where restaurant is located? These will be your customers. I wouldn’t expect any profit the first year. After 20+ years working in restaurants, I “switched” to the marketing side of things. My website is still under construction, but take a look for some marketing ideas/info. http://www.designrestaurantmenus.com
