Both the service members and their families make sacrifices. These sacrifices are for the good of the nation. In the Army we call it selfless service, it’s the quality that makes a Soldier jump on a grenade to save the lives of his team or a medic to continue working to save a life when his own is threatened. I don’t know anyone who stays in for the money, some join for it, but they soon learn the more important things.
Not everyone joins the military for profit. There are many benefits for having served in the armed forces, most are not financial.
