This is self perpetuating corruption and will continue until politician in general are severely prosecuted for accepting bribes of any kind. The first needed step would be to make it a punishable offense for anyone with a law degree who has been accepted to practice before the bar in any state to run for public office. Because any practicing lawyer is automatically part of the Judaical branch of government it is a factual and technical conflict of interest for a lawyer to hold a elected office in either the Legislative or Executive branch of government.
Only by enforcing this can we ever hope to eliminate corruption from government!

It was the oil companies who asked their scientists to ‘tone down’ their findings on climate change.
If we become more reliant on renewable energy sources such as wind and wave power there will be less need for oil. The price of oil will then drop. This is not what the oil companies want.
Anyway who said there’s going to be a disaster? There will certainly be changes but nothing we can’t adapt to.
“Peak oil” is hooey. There’s lots of oil and our ability to get it keeps improving.
Most of the corruption is on the alarmist side.
I think it’s unfair to characterize oil companies as those who “contribute the most to global warming.” They are not burning the oil, they are filling society’s need for it. Similarly for the coal companies. We are all contributing to it. I think smart companies can recognize where future opportunities lie and invest accordingly.
And for those that don’t believe in the concept of peak oil, try comparing the number of countries where oil production is still rising to those where it has already peaked. It’s hard to understand how peak oil will not apply to the world as a whole when it applies to virtually every country that has ever had sizable production.
