If your looking for people to invest in your business, the best place to start are conventions, of course the convention must be relevant to what sort of business your running. If your product/service has potential, investors will most likely look into it. Something which is particularly important with investors and to increase your chances of success is a demonstration of your product/service.

'Carc CowBoy' has made some noteworthy points as well.

As for investing, I would recommend starting out small, perhaps contact a broker and just buy some shares :)

To answer the latter part of your question, use google to find conventions/brokers local to you, or contact financial institutions, like 'Carc Cowboy' has already stated.

My friend, I would advise you not using the internet for that. You will become highly misled by all the offers there. Your best bet would be to:
1. Prepare a business plan (the format for this you can search for in the internet=
2. Take your business plan and powerpoint presentation and offer to introduce it to local private investors whose door you have to go knock on... Dont go to public companies, but to actual private investors.... Private banks (Jpmorgan, Goldman Sachs and especially Citibank, can help you get in contact with some of their clients who are interested in investing in new ventures).

I'd say that investing for the long term in most US companies is too risky now. It's not just the GM and the Chrysler owners and creditors who go shafted. A lot of US companies are now run for the benefit of their executives and directors rather than for the benefit of their shareholders.

Common shareholders are owners only in name and not in practice. They have virtually no influence over the management of the companies they own. And that's why so many company executives pay themselves so much money.
http://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/article.cfm?articleid=1727

I'd say that investing for the long term in most US companies now is a big gamble due to poor governance of these companies and unpredictable government interference in the economy. Probably short-term trading is now less of a gamble than long-term investing is.

You need to fully understand the company you are investing in, before investing in it. Check the balance sheet, press releases about the company. Typically companies who have alot of press are risky investments.
Like I tell everyone, dont invest into anything unless you fully understand what your investing into. Investing in GM with the rent money prolly isnt a good idea. Investing in GM with money you dont plan on touching for 10 years might be different.

Well that's the game of buying stocks. If you are looking for no risk with minimum gains then you can get that kind of exposure. The ball really is in your court. The only problem is we, as investors, for we are just as guilty, love the risk. The only investors who will go down with this ship are those who ignored the warning signs, did not diversify their portfolio and did not equip themselves with the required knowledge for times likes these.
